In May 2011, BBC Radio broadcast a special season of programmes to celebrate Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday. There were around 25 in total. Some were purely music shows, others took a more documentary style and there were some discussion shows which looked at different aspects of the man’s life and career.
I’m in the midst of uploading all of these in the order they were broadcast (with the exception of the 6-part Bob Dylan Story and Blowin’ in the Wind: Bob Dylan’s Spiritual Journey, both of which are already available on Demonoid).
This is upload number 6, the first in a 4-part series called Changing Times from BBC 6 Music. This episode is entitled 1969, Nashville Skyline and it explores the way in which Dylan re-invented himself at the end of the 1960s.
Having been out of the public eye for quite some time, Dylan returned with a new album, a new sound and new look in 1969. The album Nashville Skyline surprised many with its simple country-tinged songs. He appeared on Johnny Cash’s TV show and chose to return to the concert stage not at Woodstock, but at the Isle of Wight Festival.
In this programme we hear from Judy Gascoyne, who was housekeeper for Bob and Sara Dylan while they stayed at a farm on the island to rehearse with The Band. Bob entertained his friends The Beatles there and played tennis with them. We also hear from Dylan biographer Howard Sounes and musician and Dylan chronicler Sid Griffin, as well as former England cricket captain Bob Willis, who added the name Dylan to his forenames and has seen Dylan live around fifty times.
